Fostering friendly communities where everyone feels safe and respected is vital for residents to feel safe. Sometimes, disagreements between neighbours can arise, leading to tension and discomfort. That's where mediation comes in – a powerful tool for resolving conflicts and building stronger, more cohesive communities.

What Is Mediation?
Mediation is a voluntary process where an impartial third party, called a mediator, helps people in dispute to find a mutually acceptable solution. It's not about determining who's right or wrong, but about working together to find a way forward that benefits everyone involved.
Key Features Of Mediation:
· Neutral and non-judgemental
· Confidential discussions
· Impartial facilitation
· Focus on future cooperation
How Does Mediation Work?
1. Safe Environment: Mediators create a structured, safe space for open communication.
2. Active Participation: All parties contribute their thoughts and feelings.
3. Guided Conversations: Mediators facilitate discussions, helping participants express themselves clearly.
4. Collaborative Solutions: Parties work together to find resolutions they all agree on.
The mediator doesn't make decisions for you – they're there to guide the conversation and help you find your own solutions.
Benefits Of Choosing Mediation
Opting for mediation can bring numerous advantages:
· Early Resolution: Address issues before they escalate
· Empowerment: Take control of your situation
· Cost-Effective: Save time and money compared to formal procedures
· Lasting Solutions: Create agreements that work for everyone
· Improved Understanding: Gain insights to prevent future conflict
Mediation & Anti-Social Behaviour
We understand that anti-social behaviour (ASB) can significantly impact your quality of life. Our Housing Officers may suggest mediation as an effective way to address ASB issues. The goal isn't to make anyone homeless, but to stop the problematic behaviour and improve community relations.
Our Mediation Service
Lancaster City Council works with ADR Mediation & Training CIC, an independent organisation based in Preston, to provide professional mediation services. If you're experiencing difficulties with a neighbour or dealing with ASB, speak to your Housing Officer about whether mediation might be right for you.
Taking the First Step
Choosing mediation shows a commitment to positive change and community well-being. It's an opportunity to:
· Have your voice heard
· Understand different perspectives
· Work collaboratively towards solutions
· Improve your living environment
Remember, successful mediation relies on all parties being willing to participate and find common ground. It's about looking forward, not dwelling on past grievances. You can read more about how ADR Mediation & Training CIC can help you to resolve community conflicts and disputes by reading their leaflet , or by visiting their website by clicking here.
