If you book a collection and then want to cancel, we can only refund your payment if you give us notice of at least one clear working day.

No, you cannot choose a specific time for your collection. Collections times depend on item location. Our collection times are as follows:

• Morning slots between 9am and 1pm
• Afternoon slots between 1pm and 5pm

Yes, the Bulky Matters driver and crew member will arrive at the agreed time slot and, with your permission, enter your house and carefully remove the item/s. We will also ask you to sign a form to show that you agree to the items in question being removed. All staff are specially trained to handle your items carefully, and be respectful and courteous whilst in your home. All staff have undergone full enhanced clearances with the Criminal Records Bureau, to give householders that extra reassurance.

Yes, the Bulky Matters team are committed to ensuring that we always turn up on the agreed date and within the hours specified. In the event of circumstances beyond our control (traffic problems, breakdowns etc) we will contact you and let you know when the collection will be.

The payment is to help cover the costs of the service. Previously all items were collected and then landfilled. No appointments were given and collection could take up to 4 weeks or more. In any case the cost of landfilling is increasing dramatically and because of new legislation the Council would have no longer been able to collect items like T.V.s and monitors in the way it had done in the past.

No, that is not possible.

Carpets and other floor coverings cannot generally be reused or recycled. If you are having a new carpet fitted you should ask your carpet supplier to dispose of the old one for you. Alternatively carpets can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) at Salt Ayre, or Keer Bridge in Carnforth, or you can arrange for Environmental Services to give you a quotation for collecting and disposing of items for you.

The items will be taken firstly to the new Bulky Matters warehousing and distribution ‘Sort It’ centre; where they will be sorted into what is reusable, what needs repair, what can be stripped down for parts and what can be recycled / reprocessed. The left-over or “residual waste” will be collected and taken to the landfill site.

Reusable items will do to disadvantaged people who live in the district. Furniture Matters currently works with over 100 local statutory and voluntary sector organisations that are ‘signed up’ as accredited referral agencies (e.g. Health Visitors, the Probation Service, Social Services, Women’s Aid, Age Concern, CABs etc). They refer their clients to us if they are in need of basic household items such as a bed to sleep in, a washer, a cooker etc.

No. Whilst we welcome reusable items, this is a bulky household waste collection service. An item does not have to be reusable or recyclable for us to collect it. As long as it is on the list, and you have named it and paid for it, at the time of making the booking with the council’s customer service centre, then we will collect it whatever its condition and dispose of it for you.
