Lancaster Square Routes Phase 2 2013-14

Works as part of the second phase of the Lancaster Square Routes initiative were undertaken between March and November 2014. 

Over £1.3 million was invested in Lancaster city centre to reinvigorate Market Square and surrounding streets. These works were led by the city council in close partnership with the county council and co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund Programme 2007-2013 and both councils.

Works included:

• New stone surfacing for the whole of Market Square and the adjoining stretch of Market Street, Cheapside, Horseshoe Corner and Penny Street, including bespoke features at ginnel entrances
• New, high quality, and better sited seating
• A new multi-purpose centrepiece to Market Square, offering seating, staging and 'A Record of Lancaster'; an interpretive artwork relating to the people, places and events that have helped shape Lancaster
• Return of the horseshoe to Horseshoe Corner
• New and improved pedestrian wayfinding system offering heads up mapping, walking times to key destinations and interpretative narratives and artwork as a further part of 'A Record of Lancaster'. This work was co-funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund and further phases to replace the old finger post system will be delivered as funding permits
• New LED street lighting to Cheapside and part Penny Street and New Street
• New and better sited street furniture.

Additional works were carried out on the remaining sections of Market Street and also New Street Square including re-paving and new street furniture.

'A Record of Lancaster' was Highly Commended in the 2015 Landscape Institute Awards - Communications category. Lancaster Square Routes has also been short-listed for a Civic Trust award.
