Lancaster Square Routes Phase 1 2011-12

The 1st phase of Lancaster Square Routes public realm works took place in 2011-12. 1st phase works took place in Market Square and Gage Street and Ffrances Passage.

Market Square

The Vision

To create a classic, timeless public square of the highest quality which respects the architecture of the surrounding buildings and embraces city life. A place to trade, gather, meet and celebrate.

The first phase of works included the following:

• Removal of the fountain and reinstatement of existing benches on temporary surface.
• Re-surfacing of the central part of the square to form part of the 'carpet' rolling out from the museum steps
• Improvements to street lighting both around the square and within it.
• Illumination of the Old Town Hall façade.

Gage Street and Ffrances Passage

The Vision

To upgrade this area to give pedestrians priority and encourage movement between Dalton Square and the city centre.

The first phase of works included the following

• Improved lighting
• Re-surfacing throughout Ffrances Passage
• New drainage

Street lighting improvements

New building mounted lights were installed around the square, along the length of Market Street down to Horseshoe Corner and along to Ffrances Passage and up Gage Street.

As well as meeting the necessary lighting levels, the new LED lights give a much nicer, diffused light than the previous luminaires and are much more efficient, reduce C02 emissions and provide high energy savings.
