Adoption of the AONB DPD
Lancaster City Council resolved to adopt the AONB DPD at a meeting on 13 March 2019 and the DPD also forms part of the Lancaster City Council Development Plan. South Lakeland District Council resolved to adopt the AONB DPD at a meeting on 28 March 2019. It therefore came into effect from that date and forms part of the South Lakeland District Council Development Plan. More details here
Stunning limestone pavements, ancient woodlands, intimate orchards and meadows and an impressive coastline make Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) one of England's finest landscapes. From the simple beauty of the lady's-slipper orchid to the shining sands of Morecambe Bay, the area is simply awe-inspiring - full of natural spectacles and a surprise around every corner.
The 46 AONBs in Britain are nationally protected landscapes cared for by locally accountable partnerships which:
- Work to conserve and enhance the natural and cultural heritage of the UK's Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ensuring they can meet the challenges of the future
- Support the economic and social wellbeing of local communities in ways which contribute to the conservation and enhancement of natural beauty
- Promote public understanding and enjoyment of the nature and culture and encourage people to take action for their conservation
- Value, sustain and promote the benefits that AONBs provide for society, including clean air and water, food, carbon storage and other services vital to the nation's health and wellbeing
The Arnside and Silverdale AONB Partnership is made up of the four responsible local authorities - Lancaster City Council, South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council and Lancashire County Council - statutory agencies, voluntary bodies, parish councils, businesses, user groups, landowners and farming representatives
