Climate & Nature Strategy logo

We're committed to supporting the district achieve net zero CO2 emissions and as part of that, we are creating a unique climate and nature strategy.  We have been working with residents and partners to put together a vision for a vibrant, climate resilient district, holding a number of workshops across the district during October and November 2024.  We are currently considering all these comments / discussions.  More details to follow on the draft plan and further engagement opportunities.  In the meantime feel free to email us at climate-emergency@lancaster.gov.uk if you have any queries.

Top of the Leaderboard 

Lancaster City Council is celebrating after topping a leaderboard for district councils in an assessment of the actions being taken to achieve net zero. Climate Emergency UK created the scorecards by assessing seven areas: buildings and heating; transport; governance and finance; planning; biodiversity; collaboration and engagement, and waste reduction and food.  

The district council average is 29% and only four district councils scored over 50%, with Lancaster the only district council to score over 60%.

The air quality in the district is improving on the whole, but in the winter months there is a rise in the common air pollutant PM2.5, mainly due to the use of domestic burning of fires and wood burners used to heat the home, but just making a few small changes can help to reduce local air pollution [29.10.2024]


This month, more than 100 people from food business across the district came together at our 5th annual Food Forum to share insights and up-skill their practices. From improving food ratings to learning effective cooling techniques and allergen updates, our event was all about ensuring businesses are equipped with the best information to operate their businesses safely for their customers. On Tuesday (October 22) the council’s cabinet approved a Local Area Energy Plan (LAEP), which sets out a long-term vision for decarbonising the district by 2040 and looks beyond the council’s own 2030 target for its direct activities.  [23.10.24]

They'll be on the plinth again in Market Square, Lancaster between 9.30am and 2.30pm to answer all your household waste and recycling questions. We were pleased to be joined by community volunteers at Manor Crescent at Slyne with Hest in our work planting almost 2,000 wildflower plug plants and wildflower seeds. We're looking forward to seeing the fruits of our labour, which include Autumn Hawkbit, Red Clover, Oxeye Daisy and Cuckoo flow


As part of the Our Future Coast project we've installed BESE (Biodegradable Elements for Starting Ecosystems) grids on the shore at Bolton-le-Sands and Hest Bank with the help of volunteers [10.10.2024]
