Metal Detecting

We are happy for the public to access most (with the exceptions stated below) of the council owned land for the purpose of metal detecting for recreational and leisure purposes providing the code of conduct is adhered to.

We ask that people do not dig up parks or any mown grass areas such as football pitches, as it would cause holes that could cause a Health and Safety risk to our other users. Beaches and shrub land are fine.

Metal detecting is not allowed between the castle and the quay side in Lancaster. These areas are formally known as Vicarage Field, Priory Meadows and Quay Meadows.

A permit is not required for metal detecting, but there is a requirement to adhere to the code of conduct mentioned above.

If any further information is required please contact publicrealm@lancaster.gov.uk
