People are being asked for their views on modifications that have been made to the Lancaster district’s Local Plan to tackle the climate emergency.

A six-week consultation has opened so people can have their say on proposed changes to the revised plan. A government appointed inspector will consider these comments when writing her report on the plan.

Over the last few years Lancaster City Council has been reviewing the Local Plan to see if better outcomes can be achieved to address climate change from new development by reducing carbon emissions and creating buildings that are more resilient to the effects of our changing climate.

Following local hearing sessions last autumn, the inspector advised in a letter to the council that subject to “Main Modifications” (changes) it is likely that she would find the revised plan to be ‘sound’.

The council has now published the proposed modifications and the public is invited to comment on the proposed changes.

The consultation’s main questions relate to whether the proposed modifications comply with legal requirements and meet the tests of ‘soundness’. These are the key issues that the inspector will consider when assessing the consultation responses.

At the close of the consultation the representations made will be passed to the inspector for consideration when writing her report.

Councillor Jean Parr, cabinet member with responsibility for planning and placemaking, said: “The Local Plan guides development in the district and through this partial review we are aiming to have the right policies in place to tackle the climate emergency.

“This phase of the review now provides a final opportunity for people to have their say on the modifications proposed by the council so that the planning inspector can consider these comments before writing her report.”

If the inspector finds the reviewed plan to be sound then it can be adopted by the council and help in planning decisions that take more account of our changing climate.
