Council proud to receive Disability Confident award
Lancaster City Council’s commitment to the recruitment, retention, and development of disabled staff has seen it rewarded with the Disability Confident ‘Employer’ level 2 award.
Administered by the Department for Work and Pensions, the Disability Confident scheme is designed to encourage employers to recruit and retain disabled people and those with health conditions.
The council’s award follows the launch of new support for disabled people, including the development of a disability and carers staff network and a guaranteed interview scheme for disabled applicants.
A ‘disability passport’ has also been launched to provide a record of an individual's agreed workplace adjustments and ensure these are transferred should they move job roles.
Councillor Abi Mills, the council’s Disability Champion said: "As an inclusive employer we want to embrace the unique outlook and skills that disabled people can bring to the council.
“To do so means providing appropriate support and I’m proud that we have received the Level 2 award for the work that has taken place to date.
“There are still ways we can improve and the next stage in our journey is to aim for Level 3.
“I’d also encourage all businesses within the district to consider joining the scheme and reap its benefits.”
