In 2021 the Department for Transport announced a competition to find the first headquarters of Great British Railways – a planned state-owned public body that will oversee the country’s rail transport.

Bids have been invited from local authorities for towns within their area. Following a groundswell of support from local people, organisations, and a petition from Lancaster Civic Vision, the city council has now agreed to work up an expression of interest for Carnforth.

Councillor Caroline, Jackson, leader of Lancaster City Council, said: “Carnforth fits perfectly into the criteria for this competition and would provide an outstanding location for the headquarters, due to its rail heritage, connectivity and opportunities for levelling up.

“It would be good for jobs and the local economy as well as making a statement on this district’s commitment to tackling the climate emergency through the promotion of sustainable transport options.”

Lancaster Civic Vision has started a petition to demonstrate local support for the bid.

If Carnforth is shortlisted, people will also have the chance to vote during a consultation in May.
