Mayor invites residents to join National Day of Reflection
The Mayor of Lancaster has paid tribute to all those who have lost their lives due the Covid-19 pandemic and thanked the community for their support over the last 12 months.
Today (March 23) is the anniversary of the first UK lockdown. To mark the occasion a National Day of Reflection will be held which will see a minute’s silence across the UK at 12pm, while at 8pm people are being asked to light up their doorsteps with torches, candles and mobile phones.
Lancaster’s Ashton Memorial will be lit up yellow in tribute to those who have lost their lives.
The Mayor, Councillor Malcolm Thomas, said: “This has been an incredibly difficult year and the fight against Covid-19 has affected us all.
“By joining this collective act of remembrance we can show our support for those who have been sadly bereaved and suffered as a result of the virus.
“At the same time we must remember how we have pulled together as a community to support each other and reflect on the selflessness, heroism and sacrifice that has been shown by so many.
“First and foremost we must thank our health and care workers, who have worked so hard through exceptional circumstances. They were there for us when we needed them the most, serving with compassion and professionalism.
“And we must not forget all the key workers, volunteers and members of the community who have worked throughout the many stages of the pandemic to ensure people receive the support they need.
“I hope residents will join me in the minute's silence at 12pm and lighting their doorways this evening in tribute to those we have lost.”
