Consultation to launch on draft Heritage Strategy

Lancaster City Council is launching a consultation on its new Heritage Strategy and a six-week public consultation period will run from July 30 until September 10.

The document sets out a positive strategy for managing the conservation and enhancement of the district’s historic environment, which will help inform the council’s emerging Local Plan.

Coun Janice Hanson, Cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration and planning, said: “The Lancaster district possesses such an extraordinarily rich historic environment, which has helped shape the district’s distinctive identity and character. This strategy shows the role the district has played in our national story.

"It is crucial that historic environment considerations are at the heart of regeneration, development and management decisions. This strategy is just what is needed to ensure that the historic environment is not overlooked."

The district’s archaeology, historic buildings and landscapes are of national and international importance. The strategy tries to help articulate why they are valued, looks at the ways in which they are vulnerable, as well as the opportunities for maximising their value. The document makes a series of recommendations for taking the strategy forward.

The draft Heritage Strategy will be available on our website from 30 July 2018.

Comments are invited on all aspects of the strategy, but particuarly in relation to:

  • The historic information in the document
  • The assessment of the heritage themes
  • The vulnerabilities and opportunities highlighted
  • The recommendations
  • The layout and design of the document
