Mayor of Lancaster launches poetry competition

The Mayor of Lancaster is asking local children to put pen to paper to help commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War One. 

Coun Andrew Kay has launched a quest to find the Lancaster District’s Young and Junior Poet Laureate and is asking budding writers to write an original poem of no more than 40 lines. 

It can be about the Great War itself, the signing of the Armistice, the 100th year commemorations, or any other related topic.

There are two categories: Junior Poet Laureate (up to age 11) and Young Poet Laureate (12-16).

Coun Kay said: “I am delighted to launch the Young/Junior Poet Laureate competition and I am looking forward to receiving entries from young people from across the district. Poetry enriches our lives and give a voice for children and young people to express themselves.”

The winner of each category will receive a mayoral reception and tour of Lancaster Town Hall.

The project is being run with local poet Bryan Griffin who is available to visit local schools to talk about poetry and help the children with their poems. If you are interested please email mandlpoetrysociety@aol.co.uk.

The closing date is Wednesday October 17.
