The centre has been shortlisted in the best Functional Training Gym and Local Authority/Leisure Trust Gym categories at the National Fitness Awards.

This annual event recognises excellence and achievement in gyms throughout the country.

Salt Ayre’s gym underwent a complete revamp as part of the wider redevelopment of the centre.

Facilities include a new immersive cycle studio and functional training suite.

Lancaster City Council, which owns the centre, worked successfully in partnership with Alliance Leisure Services to enable the transformation to take place.

Coun Darren Clifford, cabinet member with responsibility for sport and leisure, said: “Being shortlisted for not one but two awards is an enormous recognition of the exceptionally high standard we’ve been able to achieve with the development.

“The gym is an integral part of the £5m redevelopment of Salt Ayre and our goal of creating a leisure destination that has something for the entire community to come along and enjoy.

"Being shortlisted for this prestigious award is testament to the hard work of our staff and shows just how the public sector, when invested in appropriately, can deliver excellence.”

The awards are organised by Script Events in conjunction with leading fitness industry magazine Workout, and up to seven finalists have been selected in each category.

They will now go through to the next stage of the judging process where they will be out to impress the judges.

This stage involves a visit to each finalist by a member of the awards team before compiling a comprehensive report, which will then be passed on to an expert judging panel to decide the lucky winners.

Trophies will then be handed out an awards ceremony on Friday December 1 at The Athena in Leicester.

The latest stage of the development will see the opening of a new spa facility in October.
