Ashton Memorial lights up for good causes
Lancaster's Ashton Memorial will be illuminated by a rainbow of colours this month in support of a number of good causes.
During the evening of 1 and 2 May, the memorial was floodlit in green to celebrate St. John’s Hospice’s 50th birthday. Over the two days, a fundraising event for the hospice was taking place at Lancaster Library to commemorate 50 years since the closure of Green Ayre railway line. A model railway layout of the ‘lost’ Lancaster Green Ayre station was the centre-piece of this special event, Green Ayre Rises.
From 9 - 11 May, the monument was illuminated for four nights in yellow to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis. This was followed by an evening’s display of purple, blue and green for Fibromyalgia Awareness Day on May 12. The colour yellow is the theme again from the 15 – 21 May in support of Dementia Awareness Week with a flash of silver on May 18 during Silver Week in recognition of The Silver Line, a free helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people.
To complete the schedule of lighting schemes in May, the memorial will return to the colour purple from the 23 – 27 May to show support for the Stroke Society.
