Is your dog microchipped?

Lancaster City Council is giving all dog owners a final opportunity to avoid breaking the law with a free microchipping session in Heysham later this month.

The Government is introducing a law making it compulsory for all dogs to be micro chipped and an offence if they are not. This will come into effect on April 6.

In readiness for the new legislation, Lancaster City Council has been arranging micro chipping days across the district to ensure as many dog owners as possible comply with the new legislation and avoid a hefty fine worth £500 if their dog is found not to be microchipped.
Following a number of successful events, which saw more than 300 dogs microchipped for free, the council’s dog warden service has now arranged another event in Heysham.

It will be held on Monday, March 14 at the Centurion with Westgate Scout Hut, adjacent to Tarnbrook Road, Kingsway, Heysham from 5pm until 8pm. No need to book, just turn up with your dog.

Coun Karen Leytham, Cabinet member with responsibility for Environmental Health, said: “We believe that making the micro chipping of dogs compulsory is an important step forward for dog welfare. Also, with ever dwindling resources owing to Government cuts, it is without doubt that the new legislation will be of great assistance to our over stretched dog warden service in helping to reduce the time it can often take to reunite owners with their much loved pets.

This event provides the perfect opportunity for dog owners to take action now for free and avoid something considerably more expensive.
