Vintage by the Sea Returning to Morecambe for another year of vintage culture and creativity

Vintage by the Sea is returning to Morecambe for the fourth season on 3 and 4 September, to celebrate the brilliance of 20th century design, fashion, vehicles and entertainment with a special focus on the British seaside.

Morecambe-based practice Deco Publique will co-deliver the festival, along with Lancaster City Council and Hemingway Design’s Vintage Festival team, led by Morecambe-born Wayne Hemingway MBE, Gerardine Hemingway MBE and son Jack Hemingway who launched the Vintage Festival brand in 2010, building it to become an award winning brand with events all around the UK.

Vintage by the Sea is funded by both Lancaster City Council and Morecambe Town Council.

The festival has been a catalyst for conversation about Morecambe between residents and visitors alike with an emphasis on Morecambe’s rejuvenation and the desire of locals to put Morecambe back on the map.

In 2015 Vintage by the Sea attracted more than 40,000 people to the festival and with over 40% of visitors travelling from outside the area, the event has proven to be a true attraction to and for Morecambe, dramatically impacting on economic impact and contributing £950,000 to the local economy.

Vintage by the Sea producers, Deco Publique, are bringing back the best bits and adding new and exciting events to this year’s programme due to be announced throughout the summer.

Free live music, DJs playing vintage classics, carefully selected street food traders in eye catching vintage vehicles, the much loved Routemaster Bus Bar, top quality wandering street performance, free family entertainment and even more vintage workshops all return for 2016.

Popular with locals and thousands of festival visitors, the Vintage Marketplace, curated by Dotty's Vintage will transform the Midland Hotel car park whilst inside the hotel, The Design, Craft and Makers Market is set to double in size.

After becoming a festival favourite, The Pooch Parade, delivered in collaboration with local charity, Cancer Care invites pooches of all shapes and sizes to come dressed in their finest vintage and bring their owners along to take a circuit of the show ground in front of Head Judge, Wayne Hemingway!

One of the main highlights on Saturday 3rd September will be the spectacular RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which will see a Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire and Hurricane pass over Morecambe Bay.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to climb aboard a Second World War Spitfire and on Sunday 4th September the Bradford to Morecambe Vintage and Classic Car Rally rolls into the heart of the event.

There is much more for the classic vehicle lover as visitors take a free trip along the Promenade in one of Ribble Vehicle Preservation’s Trust’s heritage buses and throughout the whole weekend wander round the Vintage Classic Car Show for a visually stunning selection of handpicked classic cars, bikes and buses that take you on journey celebrating timeless automotive design.

The 1930s, Torch Club Ball will return to the iconic art deco Midland Hotel on Saturday evening with tickets and accommodation packages going on sale next week. Also returning to the Midland Hotel is the sell-out Vintage afternoon tea as well as some new additions appearing on the glorious hotel grounds. To book call 0333 2203 109.

Wayne Hemingway said: “Vintage by the Sea has become a recognised fixture on the British cultural events calendar with top quality programming and a committed audience who have a first class weekend with family and friends. Being born in Morecambe, it means a lot to me and my own family to see the seafront transformed as it will be again this September, we knew this is what Morecambe was capable of.”

Coun Darren Clifford, Lancaster City Council's Cabinet member with responsibility for tourism and leisure, said: “The council is looking forward to working in partnership with Wayne & Gerardine Hemingway again this year to bring another prestigious Vintage by the Sea to the shores of Morecambe Bay. Set against a jaw droppingly beautiful backdrop, I expect to see Morecambe's spectacular promenade thronging with thousands of happy faces, relaxing and enjoying the atmosphere that this festival never fails to create.”
