Tom’s story
Back in June 2012 I was lucky enough to start the role of Events Apprentice, which allowed me to gain a Level 2 Business Administration qualification, as well as invaluable on the job experience.
During my apprenticeship I learned a lot in relation to both indoor and outdoor event management, including risk assessments, crowd capacity analysis and general event based health and safety.
I undertook specialist training at the Emergency Planning College in York, as well as completing Emergency First Aid and Customer Services training organised via the city council's in-house training programme.
On top of the training, I learnt how important it is to build good working relationships with both internal departments, outside agencies and partnership organisations.
My current role is Platform and Events Officer, and without the skills I gained during my apprenticeship I would not have the knowledge, skills or qualifications to do what I do today.
My current role allows me to assistant manage The Platform entertainment venue and be part of the council’s outdoor event management team, which includes events such as Vintage By the Sea, Light Up Lancaster and many more!
I supervise a team of 15 casual staff to assist with the delivery of the council’s events, who are all required to work in various roles all involving a high level of customer service, including event stewarding, box office operations and bar and catering roles.
Lancaster City Council are a great employer to work for. Throughout my employment, I have had lots of valuable training opportunities, as well as the opportunity to work in lots of interesting places, with a variety of different people. I would highly recommend the apprenticeship programme to anyone who is keen to learn and enjoys a challenge!
