We understand that some of our residents use electric mobility scooters or wheelchairs to support their mobility needs, whether for getting out and about, managing walking difficulties, physical impairments, or medical conditions.
Before purchasing a mobility scooter, there are several important factors to consider:
If you live in a flat/home with its own private front door leading outside, think about where you will safely store your mobility scooter. It’s important to keep the scooter secure. If your home is too small to store it indoors, you may need to get a lockable storage shed. Before doing this, you must get approval from your local Housing Office.
For residents in Blocks of flats with common parts/communal areas, please contact Council Housing on 01524 582929 or councilhousing@lancaster.co.ukbefore purchasing a scooter, as consent is required. Your Housing Officer will discuss your storage/charging options and arrange a risk assessment. This assessment helps identify any potential issues that need to be addressed by either you or the Council before you buy a scooter.
Please note that electric (mobility) scooters MUST NOT be stored or charged in the communal areas of any Block of Flats as communal areas need to remain clear for not only your safety, biut also the safety of other residents, emergency services, and visitors to the building.
Mobility scooters must be charged inside your own home
If you need to store the scooter outside, wherever possible, please remove the battery and bring it indoors for charging. This helps keep the scooter and battery safe and reduces any potential fire risks.
Mobility scooters cannot be stored or charged in the common parts/communal areas of Blocks of flats, these areas are in the ownership and control of the Council and the Council reserves the right to remove any mobility scooter found in such areas due to the immediate Health & Safety (fire) risk they present.
Before purchasing a mobility scooter, check if there are any steps leading up to your property and ensure the pathways are wide enough to accommodate it.
While we understand the positive impact mobility scooters can have, Lancaster City Council cannot provide ramps or home adaptations for every resident who buys one. Funding for adaptations is typically available only for those who are full-time wheelchair users or who cannot safely navigate steps, even with the help of handrails.
