Living in a community means sharing spaces and experiences with people from diverse backgrounds. While this diversity enriches our lives, it can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or disputes. At Lancaster City Council, we're committed to helping you maintain positive relationships with your neighbours. This guide offers practical steps to resolve conflicts in your neighbourhood.
Our community is made up of individuals with varied lifestyles, work schedules, and family situations. Recognising and respecting these differences is often the first step in preventing conflicts. A little tolerance and understanding can go a long way in maintaining good neighbourly relations.
If you've tried talking to your neighbour and haven't reached a resolution, don't worry. There are other options available:
Mediation Services
Lancaster City Council offers a confidential and impartial mediation service through ADR Mediation & Training CIC. This service can help when:
Communication has broken down
You need a neutral party to facilitate discussions
You want to find a mutually agreeable solution
Mediation focuses on mending relationships and finding ways forward, not on assigning blame. While it may not solve every problem, it often leads to significant improvements in neighbourly relations.
Your Housing Officer can discuss this option with you if it's appropriate for your situation.
Reporting Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB)
If you're experiencing persistent issues that amount to anti-social behaviour, you can report this to us. Here's what happens when you make an ASB complaint:
A case will be opened and assigned to a Housing Officer.
The case will be categorised based on its severity.
You'll be informed of how we've categorised the case and the next steps.
Our goal is always to stop the anti-social behaviour rather than to evict anyone. We believe in finding solutions that work for everyone in our community.
If you need further advice or support, don't hesitate to contact your Housing Officer. We're here to help you navigate these challenges and maintain a peaceful living environment for all our residents.
