Wheelie recycling bins are replacing recycling boxes

Between September 2025, and April 2026, we will replace the current 55 litre recycling boxes with 240 litre wheelie bins — for those with space on their property to accommodate them.

The old boxes will be removed on a recycling collection day and sent away to be recycled. If you would like to repurpose your boxes, please firmly attach a note to your boxes stating this (ideally facing the road). Although we will do our very best to ensure your box is left, we cannot guarantee this will happen as staff are working at pace and notes may be removed by the weather.

Once you have received your bins you can start using them straight away. These will be collected from the same place that your household refuse bin is currently collected from, which may mean you will need to relocate your bins as they will be delivered to the front of properties.

Why are we making these changes?

We are making these changes to ensure every resident has enough space in their recycling containers for the switch to three-weekly collections from April 2026 and for soft-plastic recycling in the near future.

Switching to wheelie bins not only increases capacity, but also reduces issues related to boxes, lids, or recycling being blown away in strong winds, as well as cardboard and paper becoming wet in the rain. This may also help lessen physical strain on collection teams from lifting heavy loads and will improve efficiency.

Lancaster City Council are making these changes to support the Government’s new Simpler Recycling legislation. This requires all councils in England to collect food waste separately by 31 March 2026 and increase the amount of waste that is sent to recycling.

What support is available?

We understand that not everyone has space on their property for 240 litre wheelie bins — those who do not use recycling boxes will be unaffected by this change. Our friendly waste and engagement officers can assess whether you qualify for alternative containers or you can choose to share with a neighbour. The quickest way to discuss your needs is to email wastechanges@lancaster.gov.uk. You can also call 01524 582491.

If the change to a wheelie bin is a concern due to a mobility or medical condition, you can apply for an assisted collection by completing a form on our website and we will come onto your property to collect your bin and return it once it is emptied.
