Lancaster’s fascinating history and people who shaped the district to be brought to life by experts

Lancaster’s fascinating history, remarkable people, and hidden stories will come alive through a series of expertly guided tours and engaging talks, offering fresh insights into Lancaster’s social, cultural and literary heritage this spring.

The 2026 Story Tours and Talks series has been announced by Lancaster City Museums and will see a carefully curated programme of walking tours and illustrated talks, designed to bring Lancaster’s past to life and highlight the individuals and places that have shaped the city over centuries.

Among the highlights is Behind High Walls: Inside Lancaster Workhouse, led by Naomi Parsons, who will take participants from the parish poorhouse to Lancaster Moor, exploring the lives and stigma faced by those who sought help in the workhouse.

Literature lovers can also enjoy Literary History of Lancaster with Dr Penny Bradshaw. This tour explores the city’s literary landscape and the writers inspired by it, including William Wordsworth, Charles Dickens and Carol Ann Duffy, revealing how Lancaster’s history has influenced some of Britain’s most celebrated authors.

There’s also the opportunity to discover stories of women who shaped Lancaster during the past 300 years with Eleanor Levin in the Historical Women of Lancaster – You Choose!

And, Dr Rachel Roberts delivers Curatorial Talk – Life After Death, revealing the evolution of the Maritime Museum’s current exhibition, from local burial and cremation sites to cutting-edge science that brings forgotten people to life.

Add to that Jeremy Craddock, author of the Jigsaw Murders, and this series promises to be one not to miss.
