Fair Work Charter strengthens fair employment practices across the district

Businesses and organisations that have formally signed up to the Lancaster District Fair Work Charter were celebrated last week at a ceremony in the Ashton Memorial.

Hosted by Lancaster City Council, the event brought together local employers from a wide range of sectors, including charities, education, construction, and catering, who have committed to equal and fair employment practices.

The Charter is comprised of five core elements:

•            Fair Pay and Job Security – including working towards paying the Real Living Wage and providing stable, clear employment contracts

•            Employee Voice and Good Employee Relations – fostering open dialogue with staff and recognising the role of trade unions

•            Health, Safety and Wellbeing – ensuring safe, supportive workplaces with a proactive approach to physical and mental health

•            Flexibility, Diversity and Equality – embracing flexible working and inclusive recruitment practices

•            Development and Fulfilment – offering opportunities for skills development, apprenticeships, and wider community contribution

During the ceremony, participants were recognised for their progress toward becoming Charter Supporters, Members, or Ambassadors — tiers that reflect their achievements across the five elements.

Councillor Peter Jackson, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Lancaster Regeneration and Local Economy, said: “The Fair Work Charter forms a key part of the council’s community wealth building approach, which aims to create a prosperous and inclusive local economy.

“It’s a valuable opportunity for employers within the public, private, and third sectors in the Lancaster district to enhance their employment practices to create a healthier and more productive workforce, where businesses thrive and the benefits of growth are shared widely.

“I’d like to congratulate all those who have participated so far and encourage every local employer to get involved for a more prosperous district.”

The Fair Work Charter is accessible to organisations of all sizes and sectors, with no cost to join and free support available.
