Residents invited to attend Remembrance Sunday services
This year's Remembrance Sunday falls on November 9 and a number of services have been arranged across the Lancaster district.
Everyone is welcome to attend to remember the service and sacrifice of those that defended our freedoms in the World Wars and conflicts since.
The Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Margaret Pattison, said: “Remembrance Sunday is important to ensure we honour the sacrifices made by so many during times of conflict and to remember the horrors of war, so we can strive to prevent such tragedies in the future.
“Please also remember the annual Poppy Appeal, which is the Royal British Legion’s principal source of funds to provide practical, financial and emotional support to the Armed Forces community. The calls upon the Legion’s services are growing with each passing year, so give generously and wear your poppy with pride.”
Remembrance Sunday services will take place at the following locations:
• Lancaster
A service at the Priory Church will be held at 9.15am, after which a parade will set off from the church at 10.30am to march through the city centre to Lancaster Town Hall for a March Past. The service of remembrance will take place at Memorial Gardens at Lancaster Town Hall from 10.45am, with a two-minute silence at 11am. Refreshments will be served at the Town Hall after the service.
• Morecambe
At 10.40am, a parade will march from the Morecambe Promenade, by the Midland Hotel, to the Cenotaph on Marine Road, led by the Morecambe Band. A commemorative service will begin at 10.55am, with a two-minute silence and wreath laying. At 11.15 am the parade will march back to The Platform where refreshments will be served.
• Carnforth
A parade will leave Carnforth Civic Hall on North Road at 10.30am to march to the War Memorial Gardens for a remembrance service from 10.50am. The parade will then march to Civic Hall for 11.30am where refreshments will be served. Market Street will be temporarily closed to traffic during the service.
To help people pay their respects, Lancaster City Council has suspended parking charges on its Nelson Street Car Park in Lancaster and the Bay Arena Car Park in Morecambe.
Additional services are being held across the district by parish councils.
