Mayor of Lancaster launches poetry competition

The Mayor of Lancaster is asking local children to put pen to paper to help find his Young Poet Laureates of the year with the theme being “Unity in the Community”. 

Councillor David Whitaker has launched a quest to find this year’s Lancaster district’s Young Poet Laureates and is asking budding writers to write an original poem of no more than 40 lines. 

The theme “Unity in the Community” is asking local children to look at how we can make our communities stronger, more tolerant and show respect for each other.

There are two categories: Junior Poet Laureate (up to age 11) and Young Poet Laureate (12-16).

The Mayor said: “I am delighted to launch this year’s Young Poet Laureate competition and I am looking forward to receiving entries from young people from across the district. Poetry enriches our lives and give a voice for children and young people to express themselves.”

The winner of each category will receive a mayoral reception and tour of Lancaster Town Hall.

Local poet Bryan Griffin is available to visit local schools to talk about poetry and help the children with their poems. If you are interested please email mandlpoetrysociety@aol.co.uk.

The closing date is Friday March 13.
