New play area for Morecambe seafront

A brand new play area featuring contemporary and innovative equipment will open in Morecambe on Wednesday March 23.

Located on the seafront adjacent to the Clock Tower, the new play area boasts brand new equipment designed to give kids a fun, but challenging, experience.

The play area has been designed to be contemporary in style, with a climbing dome and stainless steel tubes to provide children opportunities to express themselves with activities such as balancing, hanging, sliding and climbing.

The equipment – which is made from marine grade stainless steel – has also been chosen to endure the exposed seafront location.

Coun Janice Hanson, Cabinet member with responsibility for planning and regeneration, said: “Traditional play areas tend to be made up of play equipment that leave little room for imagination or personal development.

“The old play area was coming to the end of its useful life and this new contemporary replacement will encourage kids to use play to improve their self-confidence and develop their imaginations.  It really complements the regeneration work in this area.”

The new play area is part the ‘Connecting Eric’ project, the aim of which has been to make better use of land between the Clock Tower toilets and Northumberland Street.

It is one piece in a bigger jigsaw of improvements which, as part of the Morecambe Area Action Plan, will create better links between the promenade and town centre.

In February work started ‘Connecting Victoria Street’ - which will see improvements being made from the north part of Euston Road into Market and Victoria streets.

Other regeneration work taking place in Morecambe by Lancaster City Council includes the replacement of the sea wall, the first phase of which (Happy Mount Park to Lord Street) is due to be completed next spring.

As part of this work the old play area on the promenade opposite Morecambe Town Hall will also be replaced.
