Follow in the footsteps of some literary legends

Lancaster's connections to Charles Dickens and playwright Alan Bennett are explored in a new book which takes you on a guided tour of Lancaster’s rich literary heritage.

‘Literary Lancaster – City of Stories’, by Dr Penny Bradshaw, is inspired by a range of texts from such literary giants as Dickens, William Wordsworth and Siegfried Sassoon.

The A5 sized publication also introduces more recent local authors as the book takes you on a journey around eight key locations in the city, presenting you with significant texts at each stage.

Dr Bradshaw, a senior lecturer in English Literature at the University of Cumbria, said: “This new book offers Lancaster tourists and locals alike a compact tour of the prolific and inspiring literary history of Lancashire through both resident and visiting authors.  Here we move from Wordsworth’s description of Lancaster Sands as 'the majestic plain whence the sea has retired' to the harrowing story of the Pendle Witches under 'Grim skies' and a 'grey remorse of rain' in Carol Ann Duffy’s evocative poem, The Lancashire Witches.”

Follow the trail around familiar paths and landmarks and see Lancaster through the eyes of authors such as Ann Radcliffe and Daniel Defoe.

Coun Darren Clifford, Cabinet member with responsibility for culture and tourism, said: “There is truly something to interest everyone in Literary Lancaster, whether that be the dark, brooding history of the castle, or the emotive poetry which emerged from World War One. This book offers a fascinating insight into Lancaster’s narrative history.”
