Town Hall clock and Ashton Memorial to light up in honour of the NHS

Both Lancaster Town Hall’s clock tower and the Ashton Memorial will be lit up on Saturday as part of the #LightItBlue campaign, a collective memorial to all those who have died in the last few months.

The display coincides with a weekend celebrating the NHS, which marks its 72nd birthday on Sunday.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic the NHS, social care staff and other key workers have been crucial in tackling the virus, saving lives and ensuring essential services are maintained.

The Mayor of Lancaster, Councillor Malcolm Thomas, said: “The NHS is so important to each and every one of us. They have worked through exceptional circumstances and been there for us when we needed them the most, serving with compassion and professionalism.

“We want to show our gratitude to the NHS and its staff, who have risked their own health to care for others during this challenging time, as well as the many other key workers and our own staff, who have continued to work tirelessly to keep essential services running.”

The council is also asking people to join in a national collective show of support for the NHS at 5pm on Sunday, when there will be a one-off clap for carers.
