How and where to recycle your used batteries

Place your batteries in a clearly-labelled recyclable tub with a lid on it

Place your batteries in a clearly-labelled recyclable tub with a lid on it

Batteries contain hazardous materials which are best kept out of landfill sites as there is a risk of polluting surrounding areas and watercourses.

By recycling batteries, their metals and chemicals are extracted and used to make new batteries and other products.

Up to 60% of a battery can be recycled.

How to recycle batteries with your kerbside collection

  1. Remove the battery from the electrical item it has been powering.
  2. Place your spent household batteries in a clean recyclable lidded plastic container such as a margarine tub
  3. Clearly mark the container 'Batteries' with a pen
  4. Put the container on top of one of your lidded recycling bins or boxes on collection day

Do not put the tub inside the bin as it may remain unnoticed and could cause a fire on board the wagon or at the processing plant.

In recent years, the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in the home has increased. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service offer top tips on how you can use and store them safely to reduce your own fire risk.
